Hi Reader,
Years ago, a former boss told me that me on a bad day is better than some people on a good day.
It was an unexpected, but lovely thing to hear. Looking back, though, it was also a very precise description of someone running on pure cognitive load. When you're the capable one, the one who holds it all, your bad days still look good from the outside. Nobody sees what it costs to produce them.
Roughly how many things were you keeping track of yesterday that never made it onto a list?
Now the harder question: How many of them are still sitting in your head?
That invisible list is the reason a day can look perfectly reasonable on paper and still leave you wrung out by 3 pm or earlier...
๐ก The gift
Claude quietly rolled out something new last week, and one design choice inside it says more than the feature itself.
It's called Reflect, a dashboard in beta that shows you how you've actually been using AI. The topics you bring to it, the patterns, the kinds of tasks. Anthropic deliberately didn't launch with a "total time spent" number because that wasn't a metric they wanted anyone to focus upon. Instead, the dashboard periodically asks you questions like this one: "What's one thing you want to keep doing yourself, even if Claude could do it faster?" It's rolling out gradually, so if it hasn't appeared in your Claude settings yet, it's on its way.
Sit with how rare that is. The company building the tool is telling you it was never about doing more.
So if you've been feeling behind because you haven't automated everything, or a little guilty about the parts of your work you don't want to hand off, consider this your permission slip. You're allowed to keep the parts you love, on purpose. Choosing what stays with you is its own kind of clarity.
โจ Something to sit with
Somewhere along the way, you've probably told yourself some version of this: "I do have systems. They just live in my head."
A system in your head isn't a system. It's cognitive load.
When everything lives in your head, you are the system. Every question routes to you. Every standard waits on you. That weight never shows up on a to-do list, which is exactly why the list can look fine while you're running on fumes.
The structure exists. It's just living in the only place that can't hold it without costing you something: your energy, your creative attention, your 3pm.
If all the AI headlines gave you whiplash this week, here's what actually matters: the major labs all shipped new models within days of each other, and the practical takeaway for a founder is smaller than the coverage suggests. The tools you already use will keep getting better underneath you. Nothing to chase or catch up on.
๐๐พ Signing off...
While my old boss wasn't wrong, neither of us ever saw what those bad days were costing me.
Whatever's on your invisible list today, I hope at least one thing quietly falls off it before Friday.
P.S. I'll be having a free workshop called Stop Waiting for Your Slow Season, about getting your time back from the week you actually have. Details are coming soon. If there's something you'd love for me to cover, hit reply and tell me. ๐ซ
